Pesticides & Vet Meds

Farm Safety

It is crucial that best practice is always adhered too when using pesticides & vet meds. Following best practice ensures not only that crops are well looked after and animals stay healthy, but it is also very important in a business sense. Consumers are often worried about what they consume with regards to medicines, via meat, & pesticides, on vegetables, and so keeping confidence high through good practice is essential.

Veterinary medicines & pesticides are controlled by legislation, this legislation covers the advertisement, sale, supply and storage of the medicines/pesticides. There are many pesticides and medicines that have been banned in the UK and it is important that you make sure you are not using or even storing any of these banned products. The HSE has heavily fined farmers in the past who have breached the legislation, one example can be seen here:

When buying pesticides, which include fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, growth regulators, rodenticides and wood preservatives you should always look for ones that have a MAFF, MAPP or HSE approved number on the label. This shows that it is approved for storage & use in the UK.

You can find lists of products that have been approved on the HSE’s ( & the Pesticides Safety Directorate’s (PSD’s) web sites (

Veterinary Medicines

The use of Veterinary medicines which may contain substances that are dangerous to human health are subject to CoSHH regulations. You can find out more about CoSHH here.

These are a few tips for you to consider when storing and/or transporting pesticides:

  • You should only store pesticides in original  containers and in an appropriate store that is built of non-combustible material, is secured and can contain any leakage or spills.
  • Accurate records need to be kept as these may  be needed if there is an emergency.
  • When transporting pesticides, you should move  them in an appropriate container on a trailer or somewhere outside of the vehicle. You should only transport them inside a vehicle if there is a bulkhead between the cab and load compartment.
  • Always keep your vehicle or container locked  when it is unattended.

There are more detailed guidelines on the HSE’s information sheet (AIS16 Guidance for storing pesticides for farmers and other professional users).

Here are a few tips for using pesticides:

  • You should only use pesticides after careful consideration and a thorough risk assessment. Get  expert advice about which product to use if you are in any doubt.
  • If you are using near a water course, you may need to fill in a local environmental risk assessment for pesticides (LERAP).
  • Special care is also required near water as aquatic life is very sensitive to pesticide contamination. If there is an  accident you will need to have a plan in place to resolve it.
  • Always follow the pesticide label instructions carefully.
  • Take the weather conditions into consideration, a wind could send the pesticides where they shouldn’t be.
  • Never consume food or drink or smoke when using pesticides.

Pesticides and/or Medicines play a crucial part in any farm getting the most from their produce. However, it is vitally important that you take all the information here, and on the HSE site, into consideration when using them.
